Those with whom we assemble, we soon resemble!

This simple old saying hides a deep Truth that can enlighten and empower every aspect of our lives:

Who we are — our very essence — is continually being transformed by the company we keep.

Stated differently, when we keep the company of what is light and bright, our lives get lighter and brighter. And when we keep the company of what is dark and discouraging, our lives can’t help but be dragged downward.

This idea might sound a little simplistic at first, but its power soon becomes evident when we put it to use in the quest to realize our highest aspirations. The key lies in understanding that this principle is active on multiple levels at once. For instance, when referring to “the company we keep,” we of course mean the people we spend time with every day — family, friends, co-workers, etc. However, on a deeper and more important level, “company” can also refer to the thoughts and feelings moving within us in any given moment.

Have you ever been home alone in a fine mood, enjoying a meal perhaps, only to find yourself bored or depressed an hour later? That’s a perfect example of the effect of hanging out with the wrong interior friends. When we are unconscious to the operation of our minds, any indigent thought or feeling that passes through us has the power to strike up a conversation and drag us into its dark circle of influence.

But just as it’s possible for us to keep bad interior company that pulls us down, so is it possible to keep positive inner company that works to raise us up in any moment we choose to remember it. This not only means that we can choose not to get dragged down when we are alone, but it also means that we can choose not to get dragged down when we find ourselves in the presence of negative people as well.

How encouraging! When life places us in a situation where a run-in with someone is inevitable — perhaps at work, with a family member, in a store, etc. — we can choose to keep the company of good and true interior friends who can help keep us from falling into negative states. And therein lies the key: when we remember that keeping the company of negative interior friends is a choice, instead of an obligation, we are free to keep the company of compassion instead of anger, generosity instead of greed, and patience instead anxiety.

Building on this idea, let’s look at four common types of people that can be identified by the four prevailing dark states that inhabit them. By learning to recognize and understand the interior workings of these four types of “toxic people,” we gain important insight into what is dark and limiting inside of us. In this way, we begin the process of liberation from everything inside of us that stands in the way of knowing the peace, happiness, success, and love that we long for.

1 Muckrakers: These negative sprits live to drag up old painful events and then revel in the anger, resentment, or bitterness that such unhappy memories hold. Stay away from any spirit, in others or in yourself, that wants you to dive into some suffering over what happened in any past moment.

2 Mud Slingers: These malicious spirits pull themselves up by pulling others down. They love to gossip, criticize, judge, and denigrate anyone who ever had the misfortune of spending time with them. The only loyalty these denizens of the unconscious worlds have is to their own pain, which they feed by involving everyone they can in their mud slinging.

3 Swamp Dwellers: There is a group of mired spirits that thrive on low vibrations, and that require a human instrument to play out their endless dark dissonance. Easily recognizable, these misfortunate forces serve up dreadful mental pictures of past and future events for the sake of the unnatural reactions they produce. Ignore these corrupted spirits and they must take their evil speculations elsewhere.

4 Life Haters: These dark spirits perpetuate their hold on the human soul by resisting the beautiful gifts of life. They trick us into commiserating with their complaining, cruelty, and irritation because without our unconscious consent, these chronically conflicted spirits can’t spread their poison.

Just as harmful viruses require a human host to exist and thrive, so do negative states require the unconscious consent of human beings to carry out their dark mission. For what power does a negative thought have other than the power to convince a person to do its bidding? The answer is none!

When we begin to consciously withdraw our consent to associate with toxic people, and the toxic thoughts and feelings inside of us, we leave them with no place to thrive. Our real inner work is to sweep clean the places in ourselves where such creatures reside which in turn brightens our life and the lives of everyone around us.

Begin today, this very moment, to withdraw any permission you have unknowingly granted these dark spirits to be in your life. Do not judge yourself, or those around you in whom these misdirected forces are active, but instead come awake and refuse to spend one more moment of your life lending your precious life force to their dark purposes.

This powerful, positive action will change your life. As you begin to refuse to consort with what is dark, you’ll find that you begin to attract with what is light, bright, and cheerful. Your relationships will deepen, your professional life will take on new vigor and freshness, and the whole of your days will begin to resemble the radiant Life that you have deliberately chosen as your conscious companion.

By Dr. Becker

I recently ran across an article about the link between nutrition and cancer in dogs and cats. According to PetfoodIndustry.com:

“Despite significant advancements in companion animal cancer treatment over the last decade, the relationships between nutrition and veterinary cancer control and prevention remain in their infancy. Developing dietary strategies for reducing companion animal cancer incidence and mortality—overall and for specific cancers—will be an exciting and challenging endeavor that will take extensive research coordination using evidence-based designs.”

Since this article — though written by a professor at the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University – was published in a trade journal for the pet food industry, I think we can assume there will be pet food companies heavily involved in developing dietary strategies to address the growing problem of cancer in pets.

And I doubt very seriously those pet food manufacturers will develop strategies that encourage pet owners to feed real, whole, fresh food and not the processed stuff they sell.

Expect to see “cancer prevention” processed pet diets coming soon to a store and/or veterinary office near you. It’s just a matter of time.

Obesity Increases Cancer Risk

The PetfoodIndustry.com article also points out that, “Caloric restriction has demonstrated the most consistent delay in the progression and prevention of tumor development across species.”

Fewer calories, it has been shown, cause the cells of the body to block tumor growth.

Too many calories, on the other hand, lead to obesity – and obesity is strongly linked to increased cancer risk in humans. There is a connection between too much glucose, increased insulin sensitivity, inflammation and oxidative stress – all factors in obesity – and cancer. And while there’s been no direct link made yet to obesity and cancer in dogs and cats, it is assumed a link exists.

So in addition to the clearly established connections between obesity and other health problems like diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, reduced quality of life and shortened lifespan, there is also increased risk that an overweight pet will develop cancer.

And what is the biggest health problem for pets today? Overweight and obesity. Certainly the increase in cancer rates among dogs and cats is in part attributable to the obesity epidemic.

Overfeeding your pet is not a loving thing to do. Food is no substitute for quality time spent with your dog or cat. And keep in mind that fat doesn’t just sit on your pet’s body harmlessly. It produces inflammation that can promote tumor development.

In order to be the best guardian you can be for your pet, you must insure she stays at a healthy weight. Parents of too-heavy and obese pets need to understand the tremendous harm they are doing to their companion animal’s health and quality of life … before it’s too late.

Inflammation Leads to Cancer

Anything that creates or promotes inflammation in the body increases the risk for serious diseases, including cancer.

Recent research points to cancer as a chronic inflammatory disease. Inflammation kills the cells of the body. It also surrounds cells with toxic inflammatory by-products that inhibit the flow of oxygen, nutrients and waste products between cells and blood. This creates an environment in which abnormal cells proliferate.

Preventing inflammation is crucial to the prevention of cancer.

One major contributor to inflammatory conditions is a diet too high in omega-6 fatty acids and too low in omega-3s. Omega-6s increase inflammation, cell proliferation and blood clotting, while the omega-3s do the reverse.

Unfortunately, the typical processed western diet – for both humans and their pets – is loaded down with omega-6 fatty acids and deficient in omega-3s.

Nutrition for Cancer Prevention

The best diet for cancer prevention is a diet that provides the nutritional components required to maintain healthy cells and repair unhealthy ones.

Cancer cells need the glucose in carbohydrates to grow and proliferate. If you limit or eliminate that energy source, you do the same with the cancer’s growth. That’s one of the reasons I always discourage feeding diets high in carbohydrates. Carbs are pro-inflammatory nutrients that also feed cancer cells.

Carbs you want to keep out of your pet’s diet include processed grains, fruits with fructose, and starchy veggies like potatoes. All dry pet food contains some form of starch (it’s not possible to create kibble without it), which is one of the reasons I’m not a fan of dry pet food.

Cancer cells generally can’t use dietary fats for energy, so appropriate amounts of good quality fats are nutritionally healthy for dogs and cats.

A healthy, species-appropriate diet for dogs and cats – one that is anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer – consists of real, whole foods, preferably served raw. It looks something like this:

High in high-quality protein, including muscle meat, organs and bone (protein should make up 75 percent of a healthy dog’s diet, and 88 percent of a cat’s diet) A few beneficial additions like probiotics, digestive enzymes and super green foods
Moderate levels of animal fat A vitamin/mineral supplement
High levels of EPA and DHA (omega-3 fatty acids) High moisture content
A few fresh cut veggies and a bit of fruit, pureed No grains; no starches

Immune System Support for Cancer Prevention

The health of your pet’s immune system is vital to her ability to defend against disease. Balanced, species-appropriate nutrition is the foundation for a healthy immune system. You can also help keep your dog’s or cat’s immune system balanced and resilient by:

destress1. Doing emotional and stress relief work strengthens the bond between you and

your animal.

2. Stress represses the immune system which can leave the body vulnerable to

ill health, disease and early aging.

3. Stress can lead to bad behavior and acting out in humans and animals.

4. Living in a tranquil home enhances the quality of life for you, your human and

animal family.

5. Being relaxed helps the body’s digestive tract to efficiently process nutrients.

6. Losing stress can lead to healthy weight loss and less emotional eating.

7. Being calm improves the performance and focus of people and animals.

8. Stressful lifestyles can aggravate and worsen pain.

9. Relaxed people and animals sleep more deeply and awaken refreshed.

10. De-stressing yourself and your animals is a loving, kind gift of health, healing,

There are many reasons for you to do all you can to decrease the stress in your life and that of our chosen family members, our pets! It has been proven time and time again, study after study (you can Google this for yourself) how awful stress is for you and we transfer these horrible feelings to our pets. It’s just wrong!

““The truth is, when we’re stressed out, so are our pets. Just as pets can sense anger, fear or illness in us – which explains why pets try to comfort us when we’re sick –they can also sense our stress. By addressing the stress in our own lives, we can help keep our pets stress-free and prevent many of the common illnesses that plague them, making them happy and healthy companions for a long time to come.” – Paul McCutcheon, D.V.M., co-author of “The New Holistic Way for Dogs and Cats”

Animals are very sensitive to our feelings. They can tell when we have had a bad day and will mirror our moods. They sense when we don’t feel good and will comfort us. Just like they sense when we are happy and initiate playtime and cuddles. For animals this is instinctive behavior. If they are in a pack they sense the mood so maintain peace harmony and security.  These are all basic needs for life and they will do all they can to balance this out for themselves and their “family” in whatever form it comes in.

What can we do to keep our pets happy and emotionally balanced? First you need to cleanse yourself of stress before you interact with your pet. Let go of your anxiety from work, co-worker drama, family crisis, take your moment and let it go. If at all possible do this before you get home.

Now some may say your crazy or weird for wanting to help your pet de-stress but those of us who know they are not just a dog, cat, bird, horse, etc.. they are your chosen family members and it is your responsibility as their human to make their lives as full, happy, and harmonious as possible.

We as humans have many different ways to de-stress whether it is healthy or not. We may choose to do a spiritual relaxation like prayer, meditation or going to a fellowship of people who have similar beliefs as you do whether it is a church or a bar. We may do physical activity to release stress like running, walking, or yoga.  Some of us just blare the stereo and lose ourselves in the music by dancing and singing. Whatever you do I would encourage you to try healthy alternatives as opposed to the not so healthy ones such as overeating, drug abuse, or any form of self abuse or abuse of others.

As the world negative economic situations and natural disasters continue, expert studies are reporting an increase in human and animal stress.

Pet owners are calling their vets concerned with their previously healthy, happy animals who now have physical and/or emotional conditions. Often the animals are responding to the owners’ stress and fears. If you’ve noticed your animals acting differently in any way, and your veterinarian can’t find anything wrong then the culprit may be fear-based stress. The stress may be coming from YOU or another human in the home.

Have you noticed that our animal family members often mirror our emotions and take on our physical conditions? Animals don’t have all the fears or knowledge of the world around them like we do and that fear and knowledge stunts our natural instincts.  Animals also have enhanced senses of smell, hearing and for some, excellent sight.

Some experts say that some animals can smell the stress hormones that the human body emits when afraid. If a human in the animal’s home is stressed, angry or afraid, the animal may react accordingly, with self-destructive or other bad behavior.

Unfortunately, we know that these animals can become emotionally or physically unbalanced or sick if the human’s stress or emotional level does not improve. Animals often reflect back to us what we need to heal in ourselves.

Now its time for your fabulous pet. Animals need mental, physical, and emotional stimulation just like we do and our animals will try to let you know about it. Unfortunately for them they have to communicate with us and we can be pretty thick headed at times. The first thing you can do is make sure you are supplying your pet with all they need.

  1. Love and attention.
  2. Environmental diversity. (walks, parks, trips to store, dog park, or farmers market).
  3. Not left alone too long. (fear of abandonment).
  4. Exercise Exercise, Exercise.
  5. Having a “job” or something to look forward to on a daily basis. (getting the paper or wearing a backpack on walks to carry their own water)
  6. Have a safe private place to go and hide or be alone.

This is a basic list and in no way should replace a trip to the vet if your animal is sick or showing abnormal behavior. I will be doing more research on the subject of happy healthy pets and will be scouring the net for fabulous products that may help us live and maintain a fabulous home for our family both human and animal members! – Christine Tobias
